KOTA SAMARAHAN: A canteen staff was slightly injured when a freak thunderstorm swept off the roof of Samarahan Golf and Country Club’s (SGCC) driving range here at 7.30pm last night. An ambulance rushed the woman to the nearby Kuching Heart Specialist centre while firemen and police rushed to the scene.

According to the General Manager of the club, Parumal Ramasay, the roofing flew across the car park 90 metres away, slightly damaging two cars.

“Like a whirlwind, the storm came so fast. Fortunately, the damage was minimal and the woman is recovering well.

“We were lucky that no more golfers were at the premises when the incident occurred,” Parumal added. The storm also slightly damaged some of the industrial shop lots at the entrance of the clubhouse. Several trees were also uprooted around the greens of the golf course and debris of the roof were strewn around the parking lots and found stuck on some trees.

The 18-hole SGCC is one of the best maintained golf courses in Kuching, with the other two being the 27-hole Sarawak Gold Club (KGS) and Damai Golf Club. Perumal said that members and guests would be able to use the driving range by Wednesday, albeit without a roof.

The SGCC was established by an Australian golf course designer about 10 years ago as a breakaway facility of the Sarawak Golf Club. Parumal said, at the moment, the management was still working out the cost of damages.
