KUCHING: The Stakan branch of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) wants the implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to be brought forward to ensure the preservation of the environment for future generations.
Branch chairman Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok agreed with the call made by social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye that the climate change bill be brought forward and be tabled in parliament as soon as possible.
Sim said it doesn’t matter who is tabling the bill because it has presumably been carved out of data from reliable agencies in Malaysia and when tabled, the rakyat will then know the direction it proposes to take.
“If the bill is good and addresses the pressing issues we are faced with like floods, landslides and drought, then the bill will help us address climate change meaningfully and begin to shape a Malaysia which will be conducive for the future generations.
Sim argued that the minister in charge may not be ready and thus result in the delay of tabling such an important bill, especially when the general election is round the corner.
“The Perikatan Nasional government has a good opportunity now with the opposition supporting it because of the allocations it receives from the government of the day and if there is a sincere determination to address climate change then the minister should not delay, and instead use this opportunity to deliver something meaningful to all Malaysians that will secure the future of our people,” he said.
He noted the numerous disasters happening in countries likes Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and even super advanced countries like Taiwan and China, is a clear indicator that climate change should be given top priority.
“When La Nina hits Malaysia we will be faced with so much uncertainty and danger so a meaningful bill passed now or soon will help address this.
“Granted we cannot anticipate an act of God but with the correct framework in place we can begin to at least avoid future major catastrophes.”
