SYDNEY:  Sarawak has come a long way from being known for its traditional extractive industries to a leader in green growth and setting new standards for sustainability across Asean and beyond.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak is a prime example of where tradition meets innovation.

He said the state’s deep cultural heritage and forward-looking vision drives the commitment to sustainable growth not just for Sarawak, but for the entire Asean region and beyond.

“Sarawak stands at a crucial juncture where we must decouple gross domestic product (GD) growth from unsustainable energy and resource consumption. This shift will not happen on its own as it requires Sarawak to embrace green policies to drive this transition.

“As such, Sarawak’s Green Economy Policy focuses on three key objectives namely the safeguarding the state’s unique biodiversity and natural resources with complete dedication and elevating the quality of life for every Sarawakian, while honouring and preserving our rich indigenous cultures.

“The other objective is fostering inclusive growth through sustainable resource use thus ensuring that our economic growth does not lead to an overconsumption of resources and high greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions,” he said in his keynote address at the Australia-Asean Business Forum 2024 here on Thursday (Aug 29).

Noting how Sarawak’s journey highlights the power of vision and dedication in implementation, Abang Johari said the state’s Green Economy Policy is not an end goal but a transformative journey that bring together various aspects like policy, governance and development to drive real change.

From ground-breaking advances in Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) to ambitious goals for renewable energy and major reductions in emissions, the state is at the forefront of the regional green transition.

“We cannot do this alone, so I invite all of you to strengthen the Australia-Asean partnership with us in innovation and economic collaboration. Let us continue to innovate, collaborate, and strive towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for Sarawak, Asean, Australia and beyond,” he said.

At the same time, Abang Johari congratulated the organising chairman and committee of the Australia-Asean Business Forum 2024 on the success of the event, adding that the forum marks a significant milestone for the 50 years of collaboration growth between Australia and Asean.

“Your tireless efforts in bringing together this dynamic and influential gathering are truly commendable. I am inspired by the collective energy and vision of so many leaders from diverse sectors, all united by a common purpose.

“Under the theme of ‘New Direction with New Opportunities’, we gather here to discuss key topics that will shape our future – from agriculture and food security to renewable energy and decarbonisation,” he said.
