KUCHING: State Reform Party (STAR) is currently eyeing at least 22 out of the 82 seats at stake in the 12th state election.

STAR president Lina Soo said the party has identified six potential candidates to contest in the state election.

The names of remaining candidates would be announced in due times, she told a press conference at a hotel here yesterday.

Soo, who is among the six, said she would be contesting in Padungan constituency.

Five others are party chairman Buln Ribos who will be fielded in Serembu; deputy president Hugh Lawrence Zehnder in Engkilili; secretary-general Simon Tiong Ing Tung in Pelawan; treasurer Chieng Lea Phing in Tanjong Batu and Fong Pau Teck in Pujut.

According to Soo, STAR would not go for all 82 seats “as our objective is to prevent any coalition ― Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) or Pakatan Harapan (PH) ― from forming the state government after the election”.

However, the 22 seats identified so far is not final and depending on circumstances the party might field candidates in more than 22 seats, she added.

“STAR wants to be the balancing force which can propel Sarawak into a new political landscape where the people will not be thrown to the mercy of any political party.

“The people of Sarawak must wake up and know that the power lies within them,” she added.

Soo said the voters are the kingmakers and the political parties are their servants, adding that by bringing an alternative balancing force into the equation, it would safeguard Sarawak’s political future and territorial integrity.

“STAR’s message to Sarawakians is always to have Sarawak in their heart and to face the new year with wisdom, courage and unity,” she added.
