TECHNOLOGY is constantly evolving, shaping the way we live, work, and connect with one another.

From the first computers to today’s smart devices, it is clear that tech has transformed almost every aspect of our daily lives.

As new innovations emerge, the need for skilled people who understand these changes becomes even more important.

It is no longer enough to simply keep up with technology – we must adapt to it and find ways to make it work for us.

Whether it is through repairs, problem-solving, or offering tech services, those who embrace the challenges of this fast-paced world play a key role in making technology more accessible and reliable for everyone.

A humble start in tech

At just 32 years of age, Mohd Amirul Fahmi has already demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt and thrive in the face of challenges.

A budding entrepreneur, he recently launched FL Enterprise, a small business specialising in computer, laptop, and printer repair services.

His journey, marked by determination, resilience, and an unwavering passion for technology, is an inspiring tale of turning setbacks into stepping stones.

Fahmi’s journey into the world of technology began early. After finishing high school, he took on a part-time job as a computer technician at a small shop in Serian while waiting for the outcome of his university enrolment.

“It was a humble start, but that experience taught me the basics of troubleshooting and repairs. Even back then, I knew I had a knack for this kind of work,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

Despite his growing interest in technology, Fahmi chose to study tourism, a decision influenced by his desire to explore new opportunities.

In 2014, he graduated with a Diploma in Tourism, a field far removed from his current line of work.

“Back then, I was not really sure what I wanted to do in life. I picked tourism because it seemed like an exciting field, but deep down, I always had an interest in technology,” he added.

Exploring tech and sales in early career

Shortly after graduation, Fahmi landed a job as a service consultant at Samsung Boulevard IT.

This role gave him his first taste of the tech industry and introduced him to the technical side of problem-solving.

“Working at Samsung was an eye-opener. It made me realise how much I enjoyed figuring out technical issues and helping customers,” he recalled.

Eager to deepen his expertise, Fahmi joined Switch, a subsidiary of CG Computer, in 2016 as a service technician.

Here, he delved into the intricacies of repairing gadgets, honing his skills and building a reputation as a reliable technician.

At Switch, he shared that he learned the value of precision and patience.

“Repairing a device is not just about fixing something; it is about understanding the problem and finding the best solution,” he said.

Despite his growing expertise in technology, Fahmi decided to explore a different path and ventured into sales.

Joining Celcom as a business sales executive, he embraced the world of corporate sales and marketing.

However, his heart remained with the technical field, prompting him to return to his roots as a computer technician at Napoleon Computer Sales & Services, located at Wisma Saberkas.

Expanding horizons

Fahmi’s career took another turn when he joined Ipiqa Holdings Sdn Bhd, a cleaning service company in Kuching, as an assistant branch manager.

“I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try something completely new,” he explained.

In this role, Fahmi gained valuable experience managing operations, building relationships with clients, and ensuring seamless service delivery.

“I learned so much about business management and customer service during my time at Ipiqa. These experiences would later prove invaluable when I started my own business,” said Fahmi.

Even as he focused on the cleaning industry, Fahmi kept a close eye on the latest technological advancements.

He followed the rollout of 5G networks and watched as artificial intelligence continued to evolve, especially in the areas of natural language processing and machine learning algorithms.

The growth of virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa highlighted the rapid pace at which technology was shaping everyday life, reinforcing Fahmi’s belief in staying connected to the tech world.

Pivoting during the pandemic

Just as Fahmi was excelling in his role, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, bringing economic challenges that led to company downsizing.

He was one of those impacted, describing it as a particularly challenging period.

“Losing my job felt like the end of the world, but I knew I could not give up. I had a family to support, and I needed to find a way to make things work,” he said.

Recognising an opportunity amid the crisis, Fahmi and a group of friends started a small cleaning company specialising in disinfection services.

He explained that during the pandemic, everyone was focused on staying safe, and disinfection was in high demand.

So, the team offered fogging and sanitisation services for homes, daycare centres, and offices, gaining a steady stream of clients.

What started as a small operation soon expanded to include the sale of disinfection products such as fogging machines and hand sanitisers.

Fahmi and his team also began offering basic and deep cleaning services for residential and commercial properties.

“It was a challenging yet rewarding experience,” Fahmi said.

“We were helping people feel safe in their homes and workplaces, and that was incredibly fulfilling.”

Rediscovering his true passion

While managing the cleaning business, Fahmi began taking on small computer repair jobs on the side.

Word of his expertise spread, and he soon found himself inundated with requests for repairs.

“People started reaching out to me, asking if I could fix their laptops or troubleshoot their computer issues. It made me realise how much I missed working in tech,” he said.

However, Fahmi didn’t immediately jump into opening his own business. Instead, he joined IMIKA, a retail company specialising in refurbished computers, laptops, and electronic gadgets, which was looking to expand into the Borneo region.

He was accepted as their technician at the company’s first Borneo branch, where he played a key role in executing the initial work to help the company establish itself.

As IMIKA expanded to other districts in Sarawak, Fahmi was at the forefront of their growth, handling technical operations and ensuring smooth execution.

With the experience and skills gained from this role, Fahmi eventually took the leap to launch his own business, FL Enterprise, using everything he had learned along the way.

He noted that starting FL Enterprise felt like coming home.

“This is what I have always wanted to do – use my skills to help people and solve their tech problems,” he added.

Building a business from the ground up

Although FL Enterprise is still in its infancy, Fahmi is determined to make it a success.

“I consider this company my baby,” he said with a smile. “I am giving it my all to ensure it grows into something big.”

His approach to business is guided by a commitment to quality service and customer satisfaction.

While his journey has been far from easy, Fahmi sees every challenge as a learning opportunity.

“For me, it is not just about fixing computers. It’s about building trust and providing solutions that make my customers’ lives easier.

“Each role I have taken on – whether in sales, tech, or management – has taught me something valuable.

“Those experiences have shaped me into the entrepreneur I am today,” he said.

Inspiring others

Fahmi’s story serves as a powerful reminder that it is never too late to pursue your passion.

“If there is one thing I have learned, it is that you should never stop chasing your dreams,” he said.

“Life will throw obstacles your way, but with hard work and determination, you can overcome anything.”

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Fahmi offers a piece of advice: “Do not be afraid to take risks. Starting a business is scary, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Surround yourself with supportive people, stay focused on your goals, and never stop learning.”

As Fahmi continues to build FL Enterprise, he dreams of creating a legacy that his family and community can be proud of.

“I want FL Enterprise to be more than just a repair shop,” he said.

“I want it to be a trusted name in tech services, a place where people know they will receive honest and reliable solutions.”

Looking ahead

With unwavering determination and a deep passion for technology, Fahmi remains focused on the path ahead.

His journey, from earning a diploma in tourism to starting his own tech business, shows resilience and ambition. However, he sees this as just the beginning.

“I would not say I have achieved anything yet,” Fahmi said candidly.

“FL Enterprise is still in its infancy. Right now, it’s all about laying the foundation, learning, and growing step by step. The real adventure has only just begun.”

As he continues to nurture his company, Fahmi’s sights are firmly set on building a legacy that withstands the test of time.

“For me, this is not about quick success. It is about creating something meaningful and lasting, one repair and one satisfied customer at a time,” he added.
