MUKAH: Sarawak now can decide and chart its own future under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), remarked Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi.
He said when Sarawak was with Barisan Nasional (BN) for over 50 years, it could not make its own decision on certain matters.
He added this was one of the reasons why Sarawak had to leave BN soon after the 14th general election in 2018.
“Sarawak now can decide its own future and continue with its development programme,” he said when officiating at the presentation of certificates of appointment to community leaders in Mukah District at Menara Pehin Setia Raja here on Tuesday.
According to him, although the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government had cancelled some approved projects in Sarawak such as bridges, the GPS government continued with the bridge projects with its own funding.
He also chided Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen for not fulfilling his pre-election of giving 20 percent oil royalty and 50 percent tax collection to Sarawak.
He pointed out that as community leaders reported to the Resident and District offices, they were also the eyes and ears of the government.
At the ceremony, Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo also presented the certificates to penghulu, ketua kaum, tuai rumah and kapitan in the Tellian constituency.
Community leaders in Tamin and Kakus constituencies also received certificates from both representatives.
Administrative officer Ismail Kasah who represented Mukah Division Resident, acting Mukah District Officer Pleadzman Ahip and administrative officer Alicesia Was who represented Dalat District officer also attended the event.
