KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has clarified that the state ruling coalition had yet to decide on a date to hold the 12th state election.
Nanta said this was in response to a Facebook post under the account KabanSarawak purportedly based on a recent statement by Santubong MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
“So far there is no meeting of the GPS supreme leadership council to discuss the state election,” he said today.
Nanta, who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general, said now the GPS government was very concerned about the current spike of Covid-19 infections.
“We are seriously taking into the consideration the danger of Covid-19 on the safety and lives of the people,” he said.
In a recent interview with New Sarawak Tribune, Wan Junaidi said the state election could not be avoided as the term of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) would end soon, and the Election Commission (EC) would need to come up with special standard operating procedures (SOPs) to promote a safe environment.
“The question is when to hold the election. In December Christians will celebrate Christmas, we cannot afford to have an election on Christmas Day, we cannot hold it on Chinese New Year and during the fasting month in April and during Gawai.
“Therefore, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has got to carefully choose the date so that it does not clash with all the important dates,” he said.
