KUCHING: Sarawak is poised to become an exporter of renewable energy, particularly hydrogen, by 2027.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this would not only boost the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but also provide employment opportunities.

“We have the resources, and when we compare these resources with technology, Sarawak’s potential is vast, especially in the context of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

“So, I believe we can be decisive in transitioning from the old into the new energy,” he said during the inaugural Borneo Energy Transition Conference (BETC2024) at Riverside Majestic Hotel here on Monday (Feb 26).

Abang Johari, who is also Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, added that to become an exporter of energy, Sarawak would need to complete its facilities.

“In 2027, the facilities will be completed. This means that we will have plants capable of producing hydrogen together with South Korean companies namely, Lotte and Samsung Engineering, who are among offtakers of the production of hydrogen,” he said.

He added that approximately 7,000 tonnes of hydrogen will be reserved for domestic use especially for the industries in Sarawak.

“At the moment, we have two confirmed offtakers from Japan as well as South Korea.

“And if we were to scale up our production, there is a possibility of other countries as they have to comply with green energy.

“What I’m saying here is that Sarawak may one day become a green energy supplier for the whole region depending on the technology that is used in the production of hydrogen,” said Abang Johari.
