KUCHING: The Sarawak government is looking to digital tourism to further boost the state’s tourism industry.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the state government is pushing Sarawak towards attaining a digital economy status because it was well aware that digitalisation was a strong driver of globalisation and brought with it a great potential for revenue growth.
“We want to promote Sarawak as a must-visit destination in Malaysia ― offering a memorable experience for a multitude of different types of visitors and travellers and encourage return visits.
“With digital tourism, this will enhance and improve travellers’ experience and securing their interest,” he said.
He also stated that digital tourism would open doors of opportunities for entrepreneurs to promote their goods and services to a broader audience and increase their business prospects.
“Tourism-related businesses are transforming themselves to stay relevant and to enhance their competitive standards.
“The transition to digital tourism will create many job opportunities and generate new revenue streams,” Abdul Karim added.
The minister said this in his speech that was delivered by his assistant minister Datuk Sebastian Ting at the launching of the ‘The Return of Niah Skeletal Collections ― Long Journey Home’ seminar held at Waterfront Hotel here yesterday.
Abdul Karim added that the state government is also keen in introducing the state’s historical places, often located in remote areas, and to make them better known to the outside world.
“This is why the state government is upgrading and providing the necessary physical and digital infrastructures at our tourist destinations in order to accommodate the needs of our visitors.
“The upcoming Sarawak Museum app will have all the details and guides for all the historical monuments, buildings and sites throughout Sarawak,” he said.
