State govt to assist houses of worship, people assured

KUCHING: Industries and Investment Assistant Minister Malcolm Mussen Lamoh is impressed by the spirit of togetherness amongst the various communities within the Mile 12 Kuching-Serian Road area.

Speaking during his visit to St Philip’s Chapel Wednesday, the Batang Ai assemblyman said works to improve facilities at the chapel were progressing well due to good leadership and a hardworking committee.

“Let me assure you, the state government feels encouraged to help houses of worship when their leaders and committees are proactive,” he said, and went on to announce a government grant of RM20,000 to enable the chapel to carry out its various physical developments.

Malcolm further announced an additional RM5,000 grant for the Chapel’s Women Fellowship to run its activities.

The chapel comes under St James Quop’s parish and has about 350 members made up of the various races residing in the area.

On Wednesday Malcolm joined members of the chapel to celebrate its 35th Patronal Day. Members of the chapel also celebrated Holy Communion conducted by the Venerable Canon Andrew Stephen Paha.

In his welcoming speech chairman of the chapel’s committee, Sebastian Rengian, thanked Malcolm for his presence and the state government for its support for the churches in the state.

He said the chapel is presently undergoing various physical developments such as the construction of a bell tower and a concrete perimeter fence.

Also present was Betong Resident Friday Belik, the chapel’s advisor.
