Performing arts showcase 14 groups
KUCHING: The state-level Malaysia Theatre Festival is currently on at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Cultural Hall here.
The event is a collaboration between the state government, Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN), and DBP.
Fourteen groups will be performing from Sept 14 to 28, starting at 8pm.
Mas Gading Community College kicked things off last Saturday, followed by Studio Labu Sakti the next day, while on Monday, it was Persatuan Seni Persembahan Sifar’s turn. Grup Teater Lemak Manis from Unimas performed on Tuesday.
Yesterday was Perfilems’ turn while the next ones will be Grup Teater Ngoncong Junior (today), Baltec IPG Batu Lintang (tomorrow), Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia Kuching (Sunday), Pertubuhan Teater Sanggar Kreatif, Kuching (Sept 23), Kelab Seni Lakon Bau (Sept 24), Grup Teater Asiilah (Sept 25 ), Grup Teater Saoh UiTM Cawangan Sarawak 2 (Sept 26), Unit Grup Theatre dan Drama Chempeka (Sept 27) and finally, Grup Teater Berkaol UiTM Cawangan Sarawak 1 (Sept 28).
Entry is free and the presentation of prizes will be held on Sept 29, Sunday night, to be graced by State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
State JKKN assistant director Johan Wahyuddin Taib explained that among the objectives was to provide a platform for those interested in the performing arts to upgrade their craft, and to promote performing arts as a tourism product.
Besides the nightly performances, there are also side events for visitors.
The events, including an expo and sale of arts and culture products at the car park in front of the hall, will start as early as 10am on Sept 22 and 29.
Other interesting events include children colouring contest, traditional games competition, traditional costume fashion show, poetry recital, and many more.
