KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief Michael Tiang says he agrees with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s decree that a state of emergency be imposed in the country.
“I agree that due to the escalating situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, this is a right decision to be made by the government albeit very much unprecedented situation,” he said on Tuesday (Jan 12).
He said with the state of emergency until Aug 1, it also meant that all elections would be postponed, including the state polls, which are due this year.
“In the face of the unpredictable situation of the pandemic, it is time not only for the frontliners but everyone to take up the responsibility to observe standard operating procedure and relevant movement control at all levels to ensure that we all can overcome this pandemic together without losing anymore lives.”
Tiang said the war against the pandemic had not changed much since the last movement control order was imposed last year and it was still a war for the whole nation to focus on.
“In other words, we should set aside any political differences and rivalries during this time.
“And give our full support to the federal and state governments to play their roles effectively in safeguarding our citizens’ welfare and interests in the midst of this pandemic.”
