KUCHING: Two new Covid-19 cases were recorded in this district on Monday (Dec 28), bringing the cumulative total number of cases to 1,110.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the first case was a local woman who returned from Congo via a flight to Kuala Lumpur before arriving at Kuching International Airport (KIA) on Dec 25.

“She is an accountant working in a state-owned company in Congo since February. The case underwent rT-PCR Covid-19 screening in Congo on Dec 21 before flying back to Malaysia and the result was found to be negative.

“RTK Antigen test screening upon arrival of this case at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) was also not reactive for Covid-19. Upon arrival at KIA on Dec 25, the case was admitted to a hotel quarantine centre for mandatory quarantine and Covid-19 screening.

“The case then underwent Covid-19 screening on Dec 26 and the rT-PCR test was found to be positive,” he told a press conference on Monday.

Uggah said the second case involved an illegal foreign worker who was arrested by the authorities as a result of a public complaint in Bau District through Ops Benteng on Dec 25.

“The case was among six others who were arrested for illegally entering the country and without valid travel documents.

“The case was brought for Covid-19 screening at a government health clinic in Kuching on Dec 26 and the test was found to be positive on Dec 28,” he added.

Uggah explained that both cases had shown no signs or symptoms and were referred to Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment.
