KUCHING: Discipline plays a crucial role in achieving success in sports, as it not only shapes an athlete’s mindset but also fosters consistent performance and teamwork.

State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki stressed that maintaining discipline is essential in any competition, whether at the international, national or state level.

“This is vital because you’re not just representing the SUK, you’re carrying the Sarawak flag.

“Many people now recognise Sarawak through television, so you must prove yourselves with discipline, and of course, aim for victory,” he said.

He said this during the Sarawak Contingent Flag Handover Ceremony for the SUK Se-Malaysia Games (SUKSEM) IX, held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today (Oct 11).

Abu Bakar expressed confidence that with a strong sense of discipline, the Sarawak contingent could secure the championship, much like they did in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) and Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma), where Sarawak emerged as overall champions.

“I have high hopes for all of you. At the same time, I do not want to put too much pressure on you.

“What is most important is the spirit of sportsmanship, mutual respect, team spirit, and moving forward together.

“If we keep this unity, Sarawak can also be the champion in this event,” he added.

SUKSEM IX will be held in Terengganu Darul Iman from Oct 15 to 19, with Sarawak set to compete in 10 sports, including football, badminton, netball, table tennis, sepak takraw, golf, carrom, lawn bowling, tenpin bowling, and e-sports.

A total of 220 Sarawak athletes, including  secretariats, will be representing Sarawak for this championship.

Also present at the ceremony were Deputy State Secretary (Administration) and chef de mission of SUKSEM, Datuk Buckland Bangik; UKAS director Samuel Simon, and other distinguished guests.
