KUCHING: Sarawak needs to change its education policy so that students’ critical thinking can be enhanced, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He pointed out that Sarawak can only be a force in digital economy if its education policy focuses on building critical thinking in students.
Abang Johari added that with critical thinking ability, students will be able to analyse information objectively and evaluate sources such as data, facts, observable phenomena, and research findings before coming up with a reasoned judgment.
“Sarawak is in the process of advancing towards digital economy and we certainly need more young people who are good at science and mathematics so that we can have our own Jack Ma.
“If Jack Ma can succeed, why cannot Sarawakians? We can definitely succeed if we have good education.
“It is not impossible for Sarawakians to develop e-commerce platforms like Jack Ma and thrive in the digital economy.
“Therefore, we must instil in the younger generation a love for science and mathematics-based subjects,” he said at the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Invention, Innovation and Design Expo (SIIDEx) 2019 here, yesterday.
Jack Ma, 55, who was born in Hangzhou, China, has a net worth of US$37.6 billion.
