ASAJAYA: The Sarawak government has announced plans to construct a new boulevard in Samarahan, which will serve as a key venue for official government functions.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the proposed boulevard has the potential to become a central site for government events, similar to Padang Merdeka in Kuching.
He noted that the increasing congestion at Padang Merdeka has made it less suitable for hosting large official events.
“We need to look ahead to the next 10 to 20 years to find a suitable location for such events, and we have identified the place in Samarahan.
“The proposal has already been approved by the government, and is now awaiting the tender process, which will allow the construction of Sarawak’s largest boulevard, stretching two kilometers,” he stated.
Abdul Karim was quoted saying this in a TV Sarawak (TVS) report during his speech at the Asajaya District-level Al-Quran Recital Ceremony here on Wednesday (Sept 25).
He added that the boulevard could not only be used for official events but also serve as a recreational and social activity area for local residents.
This initiative, he said, was part of the Sarawak government’s broader development plan for Samarahan, in line with the Greater Kuching development strategy.
