KUCHING: The Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunication (MUTS) will be organising a statewide campaign to address the increasing cases of vandalism targeting utility and telecommunication assets.

Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the campaign is aimed at creating deeper awareness among the public about the consequences of vandalism on essential services.

He said the initiative stems from concerns over public unrest and disruptions to crucial facilities, including those managed by agencies such as Sarawak Energy Berhad, Sesco, Kuching Water Board, as well as assets under telecommunication agencies like Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s supervision.

“Vandalism results in various damages, including theft of feeder copper, connector jumper, cables, batteries, air conditioning units, and other assets, leading to substantial losses for utility and telecommunication agencies.

“Furthermore, those involved in such acts may face potential dangers as it involves live wires or other hazardous elements that can lead to shocks, electrocution, and even loss of life.

“We aim to reduce these vandalism cases, although we understand it’s challenging to eliminate them entirely. However, we are determined to minimise them as they pose a threat to public interests and result in significant property losses.”

Julaihi made these remarks during a press conference held at the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) Tower here on Thursday (April 25).

Regarding the campaign specifics, he said it is set to be launched in June this year, with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiating the launch at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

“We aim to invite 3,000 participants to attend this large-scale campaign, involving all layers of society that we believe need to share awareness about the damages caused by vandalism.

“We have already commenced awareness campaigns in schools and plan to extend these efforts statewide after the official launch. Our goal is to create awareness among the public about the consequences of vandalism on essential services.”
