KUCHING: Residents in low-lying areas are urged to take precautionary measures in facing flash floods.
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang suggested that residents should have flash flood guard such as sand bags or other preventive measures at their door step.
“Put the flash flood guard at your door step even at door gate as it could be very helpful to prevent flood water from getting into the house.
“Actually there are many flash flood preventive equipment in the market for them to create safe zone to prevent flash flood from entering their house,” he said when met by reporters after attending a handover ceremony of medical equipment for Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Paediatric Clinic at Kozi Square here on Wednesday.
Tiang said that the local authority have been working very closely with the state Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) in inspecting the efficiency of the monsoon drains.
“I have been informed that DID throughout Sarawak has been starting to do the second cycle of their monsoon drain clearing works to maintain efficiency and even to do some repairs on the drains,” he added.
He pointed out that as the pace of urbanisation gets faster, it was inevitable that certain areas would be affected by flash flood.
“Many residents are already aware of this and have come up with preventive measures and getting ready to face the monsoon season,” he said.
