TAMPERE (Finland): Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) attended this year’s World Music Expo (Womex) 2019 to promote the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), Borneo Jazz Festival (BJF) and Sarawak.
It was also a venue for networking and for selection, as well as confirmation of bands for the festivals.
Festival organisers at the event also expressed interest in Sarawak’s traditional music industry scene, giving the opportunity for young local talents to be placed on the international stage.
RWMF will be celebrating its 23rd edition next year at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Damai from July 10-12, with plans on making the festival bigger than ever.
The festival, one of its kind in the region, attracted a record 23,650 festival goers from all over the world in 2019. Sustainability was a key consideration in the festival planning which included intensifying green initiatives, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Aside from its recycling and waste management efforts, the festival went a step further this year by discouraging the use of plastic bottles and encouraging festival goers to bring their own empty bottles which they could fill from 20 water dispensing stations made available throughout the venue.
RWMF continues to make a name for itself and the success of the festival has been further intensified with the recent recognition by Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers (Maceos) in bagging the ‘Malaysia Iconic Event Award’.
