KUCHING: Youngsters will now have access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning anchored on coding and robotics.
The programme, the first of such for young ones, is available at a robotics centre opened by RoboThink.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Datuk Wee Hong Seng who lauded the initiative, said the programme offers a wide range of activities for students of all ages to master robotics and coding.
They can do so in three different categories namely the junior robothinker, the robothinker and the robocoder.
“The initiative is to drag-and-drop programming interface and comprehensive robotics lesson plans which enable students at any skill level to dive in and start building robots,” he said.
He said students exposed to STEM have demonstrated better performance than those who have not been exposed to STEM.
“The growth of technology and its relevance today makes it all the more important for the expansion and continued introduction of STEM related disciplines,” he said.
Wee added that expanding and reinforcing STEM education can bridge the technical and experiential gap, all while broadening the mindsets of students for generations to come.
“I am optimistic about the trajectory of students’ growing interest in STEM and with RoboThink and Weston Robot spearheading the mission, we will see more and more young minds committing themselves to the realm of STEM fields.
“In order to stay competitive at the global scale with the likes of countries such as Japan, United States of America, China and Korea now more than ever we are placing the importance of participating in STEM education programmes,” he said.
Also present were Eddie Choong of Director of RoboThink Malaysia and Dr Zhang Yan Laing Chief Scientist of Weston Robot.
