FOUR initiatives have been outlined under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to increase the capacity of the ports under the jurisdiction of the Sarawak government.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi said among the initiatives are to have efficient port services, a southern terminal, Senari Free Zone, and reinvigorate Miri Port as the gateway to northern Sarawak.
“There are also five projects under PCDS 2030 with a cost of RM186.5 million currently being implemented while 15 new projects have been submitted for consideration in the Mid-Term Review of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP),” he said.
He was replying to Safiee Ahmad (GPS-Daro) during question-and-answer time who had wanted to know the government’s measures to increase the capacity of the ports in Sarawak.
On the projects for the Sarawak ports sector that are currently being implemented under the 12MP, Majang said the projects include the supply and installation of Sarawak River Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) in Kuching; a study to implement the Senari Free Zone in Kuching; a study on the Phase 1 Miri Port Master Plan; construction of the Senari Port vehicle site and facilities in Kuching; and supply, installation and commissioning of two quay cranes at Senari Kuching Port.
“Meanwhile, the projects that have been completed cover the upgrading of the Tanjung Po Lighthouse, Tanjung Datu Lighthouse, and installation of navigational aids in Tanjung Manis,” he said.
On the projects for the Tanjung Manis Port under PCDS 2023, he said they include the the supply and installation of aids to navigation; proposed supply, installation and commissioning of cranes; and proposed supply and installation of the VTMS.
“The project for the supply and installation of aids to navigation has been fully completed, while the crane and VTMS project has been submitted for consideration in the 12MP Mid-Term study,” he said.
Meanwhile, the ports that are under the jurisdiction of the Sarawak government are Kuching Port, Rajang Port, Miri Port, Tanjung Manis Port and Samalaju Port.
The Bintulu Port is under the jurisdiction of the federal government.
