KUCHING: Many big companies in the state are quite stingy when it comes to sponsoring learning and documentary activities by local public universities.

This little-known side of Sarawak was revealed by Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah when he launched the art exhibition entitled “Usungan: A Presentation of Innovation and Artistic Creation in Bonded Community, Kabong” at Saradise Gallery, Brighton Square here Friday.

Abdul Karim did not elaborate but went on to urge more public-listed companies to sponsor these activities.

“Sponsorship assistance for local universities is very important as most universities have financial constraints to carry out their learning activities.

“At least the assistance given will help them to conduct their activities more smoothly,” he added.

Karim also assured that he would continue to provide funds for the higher education institutions to continue with their respective research activities.

Touching on the event, he hoped similar activities can be continued in the future to preserve the arts and culture of the people in Sarawak.

“I am glad that Unimas and Saradise Gallery have been working together to deepen the culture practised by local communities, and trying to revive them through documenting for future generations,” Karim said.

According to him, if it is not documented in pictures or videos, such cultures and traditions could be wiped out.

The exhibition is being held at the Saradise Gallery from Feb 15 until March 19.

Saradise Gallery is a venue that features creative works of Sarawakians and is a platform for creating awareness among the public and promoting the appreciation of local arts and culture.

Also present were Saradise group chief executive officer Datuk Chris Chung, Kabong assemblyman Mohd Chee Kadir, and Unimas Applied and Creative Arts Faculty (FSGK) Dean Prof Madya Dr Musdi Shanat.
