THE Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment is currently developing the Sarawak Investment Policy to establish strategies and action plans that enhance Sarawak’s appeal as a preferred investment destination.
Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry, and Investment Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh said the Sarawak government encourages strategic partnerships with technical institutions, research centres, higher education institutions, and specialised industries like semiconductors and aerospace to drive innovation and technology development.
He said as part of this initiative, the state, through the Sarawak Digital Economic Corporation (SDEC), has established a Technology and Innovation Sandbox as a testing ground for new technologies across various sectors.
“SDEC also provides platforms such as the SDEC Technology Accelerator, Digital Village Accelerator, and Founder’s Forge, aimed at developing and commercialising technology through startup companies.
“In addition, the Sarawak government is prioritising Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), offering programmes in electrical engineering, automotive technology, and aerospace.
“Sarawak is the only region set to offer free higher education to all Sarawakians by 2026, with a focus on technical and financial courses such as engineering, accounting, cyber analytics, and computer science,” he said.
He was responding to Razaili Gapor (GPS-Beting Maro), who inquired about efforts by the Sarawak government to accelerate development in support of high-tech industries during a question-and-answer session at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
Malcolm further highlighted that the Sarawak government has approved RM31.8 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for high-tech industries, including electrical and electronics, chemicals, and green metals, from 2019 to 2023.
To date, he noted that 10 of these investment projects have been implemented.
He assured that the Sarawak government also plans to collaborate with the federal government to position Sarawak as a hub for the aerospace and semiconductor industries.
He added that Sarawak has executed a range of high-tech industrial projects, including five in electrical and electronics, three in chemicals, and two in green metals, amounting to RM9.3 billion.
