MERADONG: Now that the street lights along several roads within the Sarikei district have been installed, residents heave a sigh of relief as they feel safer travelling at night.

The street lights project involves the installation of 42 street lights along Jalan Merudu, 60 units of street lights on the stretch from Jalan Pasi to Jalan Perai junction, and five units each on Jalan Permai to Jalan Buris and in Jakar.

Sarikei MP Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who officiated at the installation of street lights ceremony at Jalan Pasi recently, said the project was completed on Aug 3.

“With these newly installed street lights, it will benefit the surrounding residents, especially when it comes to road safety,” he said.

Earlier, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change also visited 19 longhouses in Meradong district to access and identify the needs of the longhouse residents while channelling help to those in need.

Huang said it is his responsibility as an elected representative to listen to complaints and hardships faced by the community.

Later, he also handed over the Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants to the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Regina Longhouse, Augustine Mat Longhouse and Juliana Lebay Longhouse.

Sarikei District Council chairman Wong Zee Yeng, Sarikei District Council secretary Sait Enggang and Kapitan Ling Dien Yang were among those present.
