MIRI: Miri City mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang today expressed his deep concern over the lack of compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in respect of activities at Lutong Beach.

This was after carrying out his site visit to the area last weekend.

He noted that Lutong Beach lately is becoming popular due to its natural beauty.

In light of this, more people and activities are being found and carried out there including the presence of itinerant hawkers.

Yii stressed that, under such circumstances and as a preemptive measure, Miri City Council (MCC) is going to impose Covid-19 SOP compliance arrangement to this area and would also be carrying out enforcement on the compliance.

This will ensure the SOP guidelines are adhered to pertaining to the wearing of face masks, social distancing and avoiding big crowd.

No doubt the mayor said he was happy with the beach’s popularity as recreational spot for locals and visitors, however, the current Covid-19 pandemic situation in Miri made it vital to ensure SOPs needed to be complied fully. He added the positive cases were still worrisome.

“Therefore, while having their leisure time, ones should not ignore the SOPs while at public places during the present conditional movement control order (CMCO) period in order to safeguard yourself and family members as well as the others around you,” he pointed out after the visit.

He assured that the MCC will not hesitate to recommend for Lutong Beach to be closed down from the public should the traders and beach goers fail to cooperate by complying strictly with the SOPs. This will help to prevent the area from becoming a hot spot of Covid-19 outbreak.
