KUCHING: Stricter guidelines are on the cards for contractors of the Lawas Hospital and Lubok Antu Health Clinic projects who failed to meet their completion deadlines.

Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni assured that his ministry is closely monitoring the two sick projects.

“We admit that the projects in Lawas and Lubok Antu are ‘sick’ and the contractors were unable to complete them within the time period.

“But we pay close attention to these projects and we will also impose stricter guidelines on contractors who failed to complete the projects,” he told a press conference after his visit to Bako Health Clinic, here today (Jan 16).

Lukanisman said another sick project, the Petra Jaya Hospital, is now ahead of its scheduled completion by over a month following the appointment of new contractors.

He said it is important for hospitals and health clinics to be completed on time to reduce congestion in other nearby medical facilities.

“For example, the Petra Jaya Hospital project needs to be completed as soon as possible to reduce congestion at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

“With the completion of this project in 2025, I am confident that the congestion at SGH can be minimised by transferring its patients (to the new hospital),” he said.

Lukanisman also noted that his ministry is also looking to identify ways to reduce congestion in all government health facilities throughout the nation.

“A lot of formulas have been discussed and (their implementation) will take time.

“But we will try to find a solution to this issue within these 100 days,” he said.
