KUCHING: A man drowned after being swept by a strong current while bathing in Sungai Rayu, Matang on Thursday.

State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) assistant operations director Tiong Ling Hii said the department received a distressed call at 3.18pm of a man drowning at the stream.

According to him, the deceased identified as Mohd Nur Fitri Syafiq Afiq, 24, was found at 5.30pm by the department’s frogman.

“It is understood that during the incident, the victim was bathing with four of his friends when he was swept away by the current.

“Rescue operation was launched upon arriving at the scene and the victim was found some five kilometres from where he disappeared.

The victim was found in a four-metre deep stream by the divers,” he said in a statement.

Body retrieved by SAR team which included the Bomba.

He added that the remains of the victim were handed over to the police for further action.

The operation ended at 6pm.
