KUCHING: The spirit of ‘gotong royong’ (communal work) is still strong among the people of Kampung Bintawa Tengah, said Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and Kuching North City Commission) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

“This is the spirit we want to continue and pass on to future generations,” he said after the Qurban Worship Programme for Pantai Damai State Constituency here on Sunday (Aug 2).

Taking the sacrificial worship programme as an example, he said by working together, the villagers had enlivened it.

“We are proud to see this spirit of cooperation between the residents,” added Dr Abdul Rahman.

The programme was organised by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Ranting Bintawa Tengah, PBB Branch Pantai Damai, Surau Darul Ehsan, Village Development and Safety Committees (JKKK) and Saberkas Unit Bintawa Tengah as well as Pantai Damai GP Binladen Water Sports Club.

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also the Assistant Minister of Utilities (Water Supply), pointed out that although this year’s sacrificial rituals had to be carried according to the strict standard operating procedures (SOPs), all the organising committees complied with the guidelines set by the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) secretariat.

According to him, this year’s sacrificial worship programme also saw some differences such as the limited number of staff, no banquet at the sacrificial worship location and practising of social distancing.

“The SOPs were to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus,” he explained.

Also present was Bintawa Tengah Chief Sariee Kunut.
