KUCHING: MAKSAK Sarawak’s rugby team displayed exceptional resilience and determination at the recent Government Servants Welfare and Sports Council (MAKSAK) National Tournament in Kelantan, despite falling short of securing the top honours.
Team manager, Mikelson Jagger Johnny, shared his insights with Sarawak Tribune yesterday (Nov 18), emphasising the team’s mental and physical preparedness from the outset of the competition.
“Our players were fully prepared from day one. Their defence was tested to the utmost, forcing opponents to alter their offensive strategies.
“Some teams, particularly those with capped players or those who have represented the national squad, relied heavily on individual experience.
“However, our players displayed immense determination, making comebacks and fighting for every point,” he remarked.
MAKSAK Sarawak faced stiff competition throughout the tournament, including narrow losses to ATM and Johor—both teams renowned for their experience and strength.
In the Final Plate Category, MAKSAK Sarawak crashed against MAKSAK Johor with a score of 12-19.
However, they enjoyed a strong run earlier in the tournament, securing a semi-final spot in the Plate Category with an impressive 19-7 victory over MAKSAK Pulau Pinang.
The team’s journey in the Cup Quarterfinals was equally competitive, where they narrowly lost 10-12 to Majlis Sukan ATM.
Mikelson remains confident in the potential of the current squad, asserting that they are the best in Sarawak and are capable of even greater success in future tournaments.
“We are poised to do even better in upcoming competitions,” he said.
MAKSAK Sarawak’s performance at the MAKSAK National Tournament, held from Nov 14-17, serves as a testament to their growing strength and potential in Malaysian rugby, with high hopes for continued success in future tournaments.
