MIRI: Heavy rain and strong winds hit Miri City early yesterday morning. The strong winds uprooted many trees and ripped off roofs in several areas here. However, no casualties or injuries were reported. The heavy rain and strong winds began at about 5am and ended an hour later.

Among the areas affected by the strong winds were the Miri Central Police Station, Miri Open Air Market at High Street, Miri Fish Market at Jalan Bendahara and Marina ParkCity.

A resident known as Mastijah Abdul lah, 41, who l ived i n Tanjong Lobang here, said the winds were the strongest she had ever experienced in her life. According to her, she woke up when she felt her house swaying. Me anwhi l e, Mi r i Mayor, Adam Yii, in a statement, said the Miri City Council (MCC) acted promptly to repair property damaged in areas under its jurisdiction.

He said the Landscape Division was told to clear any fallen branches or trees. “We always accord top priority to public safety. “Therefore, MCC will review the structures of the buildings and landscaping requirements to prevent such events from happening in the future,” he added.
