SIBU: The Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) Sibu Division on Saturday awarded incentives to the children of its members who excelled in their studies last year.
A total of 43 children of STU members consisting of 35 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students, seven Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students and one Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) student received the academic incentives.
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang presented the incentives to the recipients.
In his address, he pointed out that in this era of globalisation, students must be willing to face new challenges in the ever-changing world of education.
In the meantime, he said, the sacrifice of teachers should also be appreciated in educating students to achieve excellence.
He said with the solid support and commitment from teachers and parents, Sibu has succeeded in producing many competent and skilled students.
“Hopefully this event will inspire students to compete to achieve excellence at the next level.
At the same ceremony, Tiang also announced a grant of RM10,000 to STU Sibu Division for their annual activities.
Also present were Chairman of STU Sibu Division Yong Sie Hing and the secretary Chieng Leh Nah.
Currently, STU Sibu Division has more than 3,500 members comprising over 60 per cent of teaching staff at primary and secondary schools in Sibu Division.
