KUCHING: Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) has called for continued efforts to overcome challenges facing schools in the state.

Its president Kullin Djayang said the recent recruitment of 1,000 teachers was a significant step forward to address teacher shortages.

Speaking at the 27th STU Biennial Conference, which was officiated by Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa’ee, he thanked the government and the Ministry.

He called for continued attention and consistency in resolving this issue which has been a major challenge for schools in the state.

He also tackled the issue of dilapidated school facilities, pointing out that many teachers are still residing in outdated quarters without adequate amenities.

“I urge the Ministry of Education and the ministry here to expedite the repair of these facilities to prevent further deterioration and potential accidents,” he said.

STU welcomed the state government’s initiative to allocate RM100 million for the maintenance of dilapidated schools.

“This move is seen as crucial for the comfort and well-being of school communities,”he added.

Additionally, he addressed the need for financial compensation for teachers who have passed away or suffered permanent disabilities due to work-related stress and poor living conditions.

Kullin also commended the Unity Government for introducing the Public Servants Salary Scheme (SSPA), which aims to adjust salaries after a 12-year gap.

He stressed that while the SSPA represents progress, it also requires teachers to uphold high standards of performance and integrity.

He also encouraged teachers to pursue postgraduate education to enhance their professional development and urged the state government to offer more scholarships for further studies.
