KUCHING: Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) believes that the 10-minute Assembly Module (M10MP) during the school weekly assembly is able to enhance the presenting skills of students. As such it is in complete agreement with the module.

The ten minutes given to the students will help train them in their time management and adhere to be disciplined with their time as the school assembly is also used for announcements and notices, said STU president Macky Joseph.

“STU feels delighted that the ‘new’ weekly school assembly witnesses the M10MP concept to fulfill the element of innovation and creativity.

“At such the M10MP during the weekly school assembly is a ‘showcase’ the school is looking forward to,” he said in a press statement yesterday when referring to the non-compulsory M10MP implementation in schools.

As the M10MP was introduced by the Teachers’ Educational Institute and Special Education campus in both primary and secondary schools in 2017, Macky said there are schools having their weekly school assembly with the promotion of Science and Math’s month, and students presenting sketches while ensuring language competency is a must.

“By doing the presentations students are actually expanding their knowledge and various skills while their peers would be able to acknowledge and share the skills, thus becoming a vital component of learning and education,” he stressed.

STU agrees that the evolution of school assemblies in the new millennium needs to be strengthened to suit the needs and expectations of ministry to achieve its target for the students to excel in various skills, as stated by Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik, Macky stated.

“However, time management and students’ involvement is vital for all students.  This is because all of them must be able to develop their skills that would enable them to work and interact with people around them effectively,” he pointed out.

Maszlee on Thursday said the Education Ministry is not making the M10MP compulsory for schools to implement. But he urged the principals to be creative in organising activities in their schools.
