SIBU: A student from a private institution lost RM13,750 after falling victim to a part-time job scheme promising lucrative commissions.

The incident happened last Saturday (June 15) when the woman, in her 20s, was added to a WhatsApp group named ‘Millennium Portfolios Event A13’ by an individual named Ho Siew Ming.

The group offered methods to earn extra income, including subscribing to the YouTube channels of Nike and Adidas with a promise of RM100 profit.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said that the student was asked to provide her Touch ‘n Go information and bank account details for documentation and verification purposes.

“The suspect also informed the victim that to make a profit of RM40,000, she needed to complete the next task by depositing RM20,000 first.

“Believing the suspect, she transferred RM13,750 into four different accounts via five transactions.

“However, the victim realised that she had been cheated after failing to receive the promised commission,” he said.

Following this, Zulkipli advised the public to exercise caution and not be swayed by job offers promising lucrative commissions on social media.

“It is important to conduct thorough due diligence by verifying the legitimacy of such offers with the relevant companies or agencies before accepting them,” he said.
