KOTA SAMARAHAN: Ng Qi Jing, a 23-year-old business and economics student with dwarfism, shared that the people in Kuching are not only kind but genuinely friendly, making her feel especially welcomed.
Qi, from Selangor, shared that the time she spent studying at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) had been a positive journey; not only did she make many friends, but they also accepted her and were unjudgemental about her height and physical appearance.
“In Selangor, whenever some people there see me, they would give me a judgemental look.
“Here, I have not experienced such a situation and that is why I love Kuching and its people so much,” she said.
Ng said this when met by reporters during the morning session of the 28th UNIMAS Convocation Ceremony at Detar Putra UNIMAS here yesterday.
She said the first year of her studies was conducted online. When she had to switch to face-to-face learning, she felt like everything was new.
“Of course, I was homesick. But that was okay because my parents always called every weekend.
“And I was not lonely because I had great friends here. At the same time, I learnt to be independent and to do things all by myself,” she added.
Ng also loves the culture and most importantly, the food, in Sarawak.
“And to be honest, before I came here, in my mind, Sarawak does not have the Kuala Lumpur vibe.
“But when I came here, everything was okay, so I was very thankful,” she added.
Ng revealed that she wanted to go for a master’s degree after she had gained some experiences in the working world.
