SIBU: Sixty-five participants from two higher learning institutions are taking part in a workshop on the use of bamboo as building material in construction.
The workshop from March 6-12 is a collaboration between University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and Nanyang Polytechnic Singapore (NPS).
It was declared open by UTS Built Environment School dean, Associate Professor Dr Haris Fadzilah Abdul Rahman at the premises of UTS here Monday (March 6).
The 65 participants comprise 10 UTS architecture lecturers, 25 UTS architecture students, five NPS architecture lecturers and 25 architecture students from NPS.
According to the event’s coordinator Wong Lin Sze, among the objectives of the workshop is to expose students to the locally grown building material, namely, bamboo.
She said it is also aimed at team building apart from involving students in hands-on construction experience.
Besides, she pointed out other aim of the workshop is to serve the Rumah Menga, Julau community by building two shelters/pavilions.
“There will be two shelter designs to be built at the Rumah Menga, Julau. Each design will be contributed by the architecture students from UTS and NPS.
Among those present at the event’s opening were NPS senior lecturer Michael Tan and Ngandang Seli who represented Rumah Menga, Julau.
