MUKAH: In a shining example of environmental awareness, Mukah Polytechnic (PMU) students have successfully organised the Smart Green Earth Hour Energy Programme.
The programme, held recently, saw students turning off lights in their residences for one hour, from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm.
“This programme is about emphasising the importance of green technology in reducing the carbon footprint in institutions and communities.
“By turning off the lights for one hour, we encourage individuals and the PMU community to use electricity wisely,” said its organising chairman Nuwairani Azurawati Sihat in a statement.
She further highlighted the programme’s aim to raise awareness about saving electricity not just in residences, but all residential colleges, administrative and academic buildings, religious areas, maintenance units and more.
“The main switchboards in buildings were shut down throughout the programme. In administrative and academic areas, security guards ensured lights were off,” she added.
The initiative was a collaborative effort between PMU’s Polytechnic and Community College SmartGreen Committee (POLYCC) and various departments, including residential management, security, facilities, and safety.
Deputy Director (Academic Support) Sophian Sout also provided his full support.
Sophian hoped that this programme would continue, fostering a culture of responsible electricity use among PMU residents.
He even proposed exploring additional programmes focused on PMU-wide energy conservation.
