KUCHING: A group of final-year students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and Open University Malaysia (OUM) recently concluded their industrial training at the New Sarawak Tribune (NST)/Suara Sarawak office.

On Thursday, four of the 22 trainees presented their experiences, highlighting the valuable lessons and challenges encountered during their time at the media organisation.

What I enjoy most about working at the New Sarawak Tribune is the working environment and the people who always care about each other. I witnessed the teamwork among my colleagues during the latest Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, and I feel like I’ll be happy to work with them. Despite being an intern, I felt valued and supported by everyone.

My most meaningful experience was attending the DUN and National Journalist’s Day 2024 (HAWANA). During the first week, I faced several challenges, such as meeting deadlines and writing news according to in-house standards. Thankfully, I was able to catch up. As an introvert, I also learned to interact with other people. However, I hope I have learned to handle stress better. By the end of this internship, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience being a journalist.

One of my favourite aspects of working with New Sarawak Tribune is learning new things in journalism, such as editing, attending events and meeting various people. Meanwhile, my writing and video skills improve daily as I cover these functions, and I better understand my surroundings.

I covered news at the DUN alongside senior journalists during my three months of industry training at Suara Sarawak. Some of the highlights of our live broadcasts were at Telaga Air and the Sting Muay Thai Studio. These experiences improved my abilities, which made me read newspapers more often and write better news articles. I was thrilled at first but knew there would be difficulties, and I had difficulty finding resources and creating freelance plans throughout the first week. However, through the training, I was able to write more effectively and accurately, improve my time management skills and gain greater confidence when speaking in public.
