KOTA SAMARAHAN: New students from various backgrounds are embarking on their academic journeys at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

As they enter their Foundation Studies programmes, these individuals bring with them a diverse collection of personal stories and aspirations, each driven by unique motivations and a strong desire to succeed.

Despite the initial apprehensions and hurdles, these students are resolute in their pursuit of knowledge and their goals, reflecting a deep-seated ambition to make a meaningful impact in their chosen fields.

Lyana Ramun Ramli.

Nur Syakirah Tazlan, Kuching, Foundation in Life Sciences:

As the eldest of three siblings with visually impaired parents, she is driven by a strong desire to succeed. She aims to excel academically to support her family.

“Universiti Malaya was my first choice, but I believe Unimas is the best option for me as it has an excellent faculty. I aspire to pursue medicine after completing my foundation studies. When I look at my family, I am determined to succeed and will do my best.”

Setting foot in Bumi Kenyalang for the first time, this Kelantan native initially felt worried about potential language barriers and difficulties in communication. However, upon arrival, he found it easy to interact with other students and is now excited to continue his studies here.

“I am determined to finish my studies so I can help my family and make my mother proud. Initially, I was afraid to come here because it is far from my family. However, if my parents asked me to go, I would comply without question. After completing my foundation studies, I plan to pursue a degree in medicine, hoping to become a doctor.”

Mohammad Farihin Fariz Zainal

Mohammad Farihin Fariz Zainal, Belaga, Foundation in Computing:

The youngest child in his family, he felt apprehensive about being away from home for the first time. But he is excited about the opportunities ahead.

“The journey from Belaga was very challenging due to the long and roller coaster-like roads. As the first batch of this programme, I hope we can do our best. I also hope that Unimas will provide us with good guidance and support.”

Muhamad Zaid Zaidil, Kuching, Foundation in Physical Sciences:

With ambitions of becoming Chief Minister of Sarawak (now known as Premier), he is focused on enhancing the country’s education system.

“I want to improve the country’s education system so that it is highly regarded and can advance the nation, producing quality students who contribute to society. Next, I plan to pursue a degree at Unimas, though I have not yet decided on a specific field of study.”

Liyana Ramun Ramli.

Liyana Ramun Ramli, Miri, Foundation in Physical Sciences:

Experiencing life away from her family for the first time, she is determined to excel in her studies, with a place on the Dean’s List.

“I feel sad being apart from my family, but I am committed to making them proud. I know Unimas is one of the best universities in Malaysia, and I want to pursue a degree in chemical engineering.”

Darren Barrichello Robin

Darren Barrichello Robin, Miri, Foundation in Life Sciences:

He had set his sights on Unimas from the beginning. Despite the distance from his hometown, he is resolute in his goal to become a doctor.
