KUCHING: The free school bus service is available for students in Kuching and Padawan Districts effective Monday (Aug 18).
The service is an initiative by the state government to help lower income families reduce their financial burdens. It provides free transportation to school and back for the students.
The service is undergoing a trial period in Kuching. It will also be implemented in other urban centres such as Miri and Sibu if it proves to be successful.
New Sarawak Tribune interviewed some students here about the bus service. All welcomed the government initiative.
Wan Nazwishal, 14
‘I think the free school bus service is a good initiative as it can help students with no means of transportation and can really help the lower income families in Kuching’
Muhd Rishwalsyah, 14
‘Definitely a great idea as some students walk to school. Sometimes, parents are busy with work so this free bus service can help them.’
Fatnin Atiqah, 16
‘The free bus service is a good initiative because not many students can afford to pay for transportation. It can help ease the financial burden of lower income families.’
Emilya Zulaikha, 14
‘The positive thing I see from this service is that it can help students get from Point A to Point B for free. But they must remember to observe social distancing in these buses to contain the spread of Covid-19. Safety should be their main priority’
Fatin Nur Shazreen, 14
‘It is a good idea but I think that more public awareness is needed. As you can see, very few students are boarding the vans or buses. Maybe the students are afraid as the free bus service is new to them.
Afiqah Amira, 14
“I think this initiative by the state government is good as it can help students who do not have their own means of transport get from one point onto another’.
