SINGAPORE: Sarawak’s ambition to link its energy grid with Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia via a subsea cable has advanced, following the completion of a technical study in partnership with Sembcorp Utilities.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that commercial discussions for the project are moving ahead positively.
“The negotiations for the energy link between Sarawak and Singapore are progressing well, while Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is conducting a pre-feasibility study on the potential for a subsea cable connection between Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.
He shared these insights during his keynote address at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) on Monday (Oct 21).
Abang Johari said the proposed subsea cable would play a crucial role in Sarawak’s contribution to the Asean Power Grid’s development, enhancing regional energy connectivity.
“This initiative not only strengthens the energy ties within Asean but also allows Sarawak to extend its renewable energy capabilities beyond its borders,” he said.
He also asserted Sarawak’s vision to serve as the ‘Battery of Asean,’ leveraging its abundant renewable energy resources, especially hydropower, to supply neighbouring Southeast Asian nations through an interconnected power grid.
However, he stressed that the success of the Asean Power Grid hinges on more than just technology and financial investment.
“It calls for political commitment, policy alignment, regulatory coherence, infrastructure growth, and strong regional cooperation,” he added.
Also present were Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abg Hipni, Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Deputy State Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee.
