SERIAN: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) has assured essential food items are sufficient in view of the possibility of a second wave of Covid-19 cases nationwide.
Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said despite the number of Covid-19 cases nationwide recently showing an upward trend, KPDNHEP was able to ensure adequate supply of essential food items
“This is because at the federal level, KPDNHEP, alongside Ministry of International Trade and Industry and Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, has always been prepared for those situations.
“We will be addressing food security issues for the whole country. Additionally, we had also found that we have all kinds of basic food items that will last us for months,” he told the press after visiting the Serian wet market here today.
He noted that basic food supply items available were not only those that had been stockpiled, but also including the availability based on the current state of supplying countries as well.
“Recently we have heard of a case where Vietnam had been unable to export its rice to Malaysia. In this regard, we immediately looked into the availability for other countries to provide us with the commodity.
“Through this, we have been able to determine what is the best strategy for ensuring that basic food supply is always available to Malaysia,” he explained.
