KUCHING: A total of 660 riders have registered for all events related to the cycling discipline at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma).

The events being contested include road events (individual and team road race / individual time trial); BMX events; downhill events, and mountain biking events (cross country Olympic and relay).

Sarawak Cycling Association president Datuk Benjamin Hasbie said cycling races are the most challenging because they involve using public roads as race tracks.

“The challenge we face is that this sport is not held indoors or in any building, but in events that require public facilities.

“That is our challenge. However, this is also an advantage for us because it can attract the surrounding community to witness the event.

“Therefore, cycling fans are welcome to come and watch the ongoing competitions to show support and help boost the morale of our athletes.”

He said this when met by reporters after the start of the individual time trial (women) road race at Politeknik Malaysia here on Wednesday (Aug 14).

Meanwhile, he mentioned that the circuit chosen as the competition venue offers an experience on par with other competitions.

“For that too, we hope our team can take advantage of being the host, which is an advantage for us.

“We also wish good luck to all athletes competing in cycling events. Congratulations to the winners,” he added.
