KUCHING: The excitement of the SUKMA Opening Ceremony was evident as around 10,000 visitors attended to show their support for the event. From as early as 1.00 pm, visitors had already filled the stadium.

Sarawak Tribune spoke to a few visitors who happily shared their feelings about the event.

SITI KHATIJAH YUSUF, 29
(Assistant manager)
‘I am definitely very proud that Sarawak can host SUKMA once again in a short period after the last SUKMA Sarawak in 2016. As a Sarawakian, I also warmly welcome athletes from all over Malaysia and Brunei, as this allows us to introduce Sarawak’s culture and beauty to them. I believe that organising a major event like this not only brings athletes but also visitors from all over Malaysia who want to witness the event firsthand and experience it themselves. My hope for Sarawak athletes is to bring home as many medals as possible as a reward for their hard work, for their families, and to bring glory to Sarawak with the hope of ranking number one this year. I believe our athletes can do it together with the team spirit among states and strengthen the bonds among us Malaysians.’

ATHIRAH ANIP, 32
(Executive)
‘It is a great opportunity for our city to showcase its hospitality and culture. It is also a boost for the local economy and brings a sense of pride to all of us here. I hope the athletes give their best performance and enjoy the experience. It’s important they gain valuable lessons and friendships that will last a lifetime. May they also inspire the younger generation to pursue sports and healthy lifestyles.’

DAYANG HANISAH ABANG AFFENDIE, 31
(Marketing personnel)
‘I am very happy. It is exciting to have such a prestigious event in our city. It puts Kuching on the map and shows everyone what a wonderful place it is. I hope the athletes remain focused and resilient throughout the competition. My wish is for them to achieve their personal bests and feel proud of their accomplishments, regardless of the outcomes.’

SHARIFAH ZULAIKHA WAN ABDUL RAHMAN, 32

‘Hosting SUKMA in Kuching is a fantastic chance to celebrate sports and bring people together. It’s been great seeing the city come alive with excitement and enthusiasm. I hope the athletes stay healthy and perform well. It’s important for them to have fun and create lasting memories. I also hope they experience the warmth and support of the Kuching community. My hopes are that the athletes strive for excellence and maintain good sportsmanship. I wish them all success and hope they carry the spirit of SUKMA with them in their future endeavours.’
