KUCHING: The medal race for the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) is on, and Sarawak have wasted no time getting on the board.

Sarawak secured their first silver and bronze today in the wushu event, setting a positive tone for the days ahead.

Chef de mission Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu is optimistic about the state’s prospects.

“Today, marks the start of the medal haul for the 21st Sukma in Sarawak and we have won our first silver and bronze medal at the wushu event this morning, this is a good start and everyone is well-prepared,” he said.

Rentap added that due to a minor accident in the women’s individual cycling event this morning, Sarawak finished fourth and 11th.

“We had our individual cycling event today, but unfortunately, we only managed to get fifth and eleventh due to a slight accident, he said.

Rentap was speaking to the New Sarawak Tribune during his visit to Megalanes Batu Kawa today.

He also offered words of encouragement to the women’s bowling team during their final official practice session before the competition kicks off tomorrow (Aug 15).

“The women’s team here are all very happy and cheerful, eager to get on the lanes tomorrow,” he said.

As Sarawak’s medal tally begin to rise, Rentap encouraged all athletes to stay focused and embody the spirit of the 21st Sukma motto — ‘Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban’.

“Do your best and enjoy. This is your time because whatever happens, you’ve given your best.

“Sarawak, don’t give up any hope and remember our motto: ‘Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban’. You know what to do and all the best to our Sarawakian athletes,” he said.
