KUALA LUMPUR: The dream to bring home silverware for the state lives on for the Sarawak squash camp as the team progresses towards the quarterfinals of the singles competition in the Sukma Games.
Nathan Kueh Tze Bing and Harith Danial Jefri in the men’s singles and Claudia Yong Bi Er in the women’s singles categories all trumped their opponents in matches held at the Jalan Duta Squash Centre here today (Sept 17).
Kueh beat Amirul Aqil of Penang 3-0 (11-1, 11-1 11-2) while Harith beat Lo Wa-Sern of Perak 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-6).
“Our players have played very well today and Nathan’s (Kueh) victory was somewhat very comprehensive.
“Harith also did very well today as he was up against Perak’s exponent who can be described as a ‘dangerous’ opponent. For him to win 3-0 was an excellent showcase of efficiency and is a spectacular performance,” said head coach Allan Pete Soyza when met by reporters after the match today.
However, luck was not on Sarawak’s side in the women’s singles category as both Sarawakian players were drawn to face each other to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Yong beat teammate Eugenia David 3-0 (11-4, 11-2, 11-2).
“Let’s see how it goes tomorrow and just hope for them to continue with their good performance. I am not too confident on the singles but our medals focus is on the doubles and mixed doubles.
“If we can win a medal in the singles, that will be a bonus to us,” he said.
Kueh will face Darren Rahul Pragasam Desmond Pragasam of Negeri Sembilan in the next round while Harith will next play Sanjay Jeeva of Negeri Sembilan in the last eight.
Yong will meet Chan Yiwen of FT Kuala Lumpur in the quarterfinals.
