KUCHING: Horror film ‘Sumpahan Jerunei,’ is set to grace the silver screen on July 27, offering audiences the historical significance behind the Melanau community’s sacred pillar, known as the “Tiang Jerunei.”
Produced by Seni Dua Puluh Dua Puluh Sdn Bhd, the film’s focuses on shedding light to the hidden history of the “Tiang Jerunei,” a subject largely unfamiliar even to locals in Sarawak.
“We recognise that many individuals in Sarawak, including members of the Melanau community, have never come across the Tiang Jerunei” said Datin Wendy Wong, the producer at Seni Duapuluh Duapuluh Sdn Bhd yesterday (June 13).
She explained that the burial customs associated with Melanau nobility, which emerged in the 13th century, gradually faded away after the arrival of the Brookes. As a result, the knowledge and significance of the “Tiang Jerunei” have largely been forgotten.
Drawing attention to the film’s powerful tagline, “do not touch anything that does not belong to you,” Wong highlighted its message, urging viewers to approach the preservation of cultural heritage with utmost care and respect.
Meanwhile, executive director Datuk Nancie Foo disclosed the tremendous interest generated by the film’s portrayal of unique cultural elements during the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival 2023 held in Dubuque, Iowa, USA, on April 26th.
“The local community was immediately intrigued, their first question being the filming location.
“They were particularly captivated by the lush jungle settings and the costumes that symbolise a rich and distinct culture,” Foo shared.
She emphasised that ‘Sumpahan Jerunei’ serves as a conduit to introduce the Melanau ethnic group to the world, showcasing their traditional attire, culture, and the mesmerising scenery predominantly filmed in Mukah and Kuching.
Directed by Jason Chong, ‘Sumpahan Jerunei’ boasts an impressive cast of renowned and seasoned actors, including Bront Palarae, Syafie Naswip, Amerul Affendi, Tony Eusoff, Uqasha Senrose and Ruminah Sidek.
