SUNGAI ASAP, Belaga: The Sungai Asap Resettlement Scheme has been renamed Apau Koyan.

The new name was made after the erection of the tallest Belawing monument of the Orang Ulu community was recorded into the Malaysia Books of Records yesterday.

The Belawing Monument, symbol of the Orang Ulu.

The 80-metre monument is the tallest Belawing monument in Uma Baha, Apau Koyan, Belaga.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah urged the Orang Ulu Community to preserve their unique arts and culture for posterity.

“I see this Belawing monument as a symbol…it’s a very symbolic tower that serves to unite the various communities in this settlement,” he said when officiating at the erection of the Belawing pole at Sungai Asap Resettlement Scheme here yesterday.

Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon said the erection of the Belawing monument was to ensure that the arts and heritage of the Orang Ulu, in particular the Kenyah, were preserved.
