ANOTHER river basin has been identified in Sungai Bangkit, Katibas, bringing the total to 12 throughout Sarawak.
Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Julaihi Narawi said this was upon request from local residents to explore alternative sources of energy.
“Our ministry will only proceed with implementation upon obtaining approval from local authorities.
“The identification process involved collaboration with local leaders. The one that we are doing right now is based on request. For example, the one in Miri, was initiated at the request of local representatives.
“But then, if there are parties that do not agree, there is no force,” he said at a press conference after his ministerial winding-up speech at the august house on Monday (May 13).
In his winding-up speech, his ministry and Sarawak Energy are actively conducting engagement sessions with communities around Sungai Tutoh, Sungai Gaat, Sungai Belaga and Sungai Trusan.
“These projects are still at the proposal stage and will only be implemented if they receive approval from local residents.”
On May 9, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said 11 river basins have been identified for the study of cascading power sources, namely Sungai Tutoh, Sungai Gaat, Sungai Belaga, Sungai Danu, Sungai Balui, Sungai Trusan, Sungai Lawas, Sungai Limbang, Sungai Tinjar, Sungai Baram and Sungai Tekalit.
