KUCHING: The construction of the Sungai Bintangor bridge along Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol is set for completion before Ramadan next year.
Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said following a meeting with the contractor, the Public Works Department (JKR) and relevant stakeholders, an agreement has been reached to extend construction hours until 10pm to expedite the project.
“If there is no interference, they (contractors) will work overtime to complete the construction immediately and maybe this bridge can be opened to the public from as early as December 31 this year,” he said.
Additionally, he also expressed regret for the delay in completing the bridge project.
“There is no doubt that there have been delays in terms of construction progress. However, we cannot put the blame on the shoulders of the contractors alone.
“This delay was beyond our control especially when COVID-19 hit and caused metal factories to close down. Shortage of metals contributed to the delay due to the competition to acquire them which became one of the problems that is beyond our control,” he said when attending the Zone 2 Aidilfitri Gathering at SK Merpati Jepang on Saturday (May 4).
He also mentioned additional issues contributing to delays, including drainage problems and local community sensitivities in the area, while expressing sympathy with nearby residents due to the temporary bridge closure.
“Residents in nearby villages are forced to use Jalan Muhibbah, Jalan Patingan and Jalan Muda Hashim as alternative roads.
“This is what is called development. With the support and encouragement of various parties, we will solve this problem as soon as possible,” he said.
